The Cane Whisperers is a tragic historical saga set in Antebellum Louisiana. When a family of slaves; Jem, Sarah and their children Jack, Coralie and Delia are lost in a card game their lives are thrown into chaos. They are won by ruthless French aristocrat, Julian De Vallière, who keeps the regally beautiful Sarah and her troubled daughter Delia and sells the remaining family members. The story follows their plight for reunion with the aid of abolitionist lawyer Mathew Reinhart, kind hearted prostitute Kaye Sommers, down and out drifter Will Parnell and blue-eyed dreamer Nathanial Colbourne. When they devise a plan for emancipation so begins a game of cat and mouse between Julian and the family he destroyed. Set against the backdrop of New Orleans and Fairfax Plantation, The Cane Whisperers is a story of love, courage against adversity and the elusive quest for freedom in a society designed to keep men and women in chains.

I couldn't put this book down once I started reading it. Very compelling story. I was expecting a better outcome, but in reality, the ending was probably the outcome suffered by a lot of slaves. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in historical fiction.Product details

The Cane Whisperers edition by Jessica Bentley Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Very good book with surprise ending.
I enjoyed reading this book but was not surprised with its ending. The book reinforced how unforbidden love still exists between black women and white men in today's society. Thank Loving Versus Virginia that today, there is no barrier, people are free to choose & love whom they wish. Even in slavery, love knew no color.
Very interesting, didn't want to put it down. Hope she follows up with the update soon.
fairly good story line, but editing just did not happen.... ending sucked
this is one of the best books i have read in a long time.I really enjoyed it very much.waiting for the next book.when will it come out? I tried to find it everwhere
Writing was very good, as was the character development. Held my attention throughout, and painted what is likely a realistic picture of the life and times of which it was written. There was some violence, but only when the story required. There was a lot of unspeakable things during the time of slavery.
Wow! Tragedy, after tragedy with no happy ending for anyone! I found my name in this book, and that character had the worse ending of all! Usually, in slave and master stories, the slave gets a bit of happiness in the end, but no one wins in this book. I feel like crying, now that my favorites are dead.
I couldn't put this book down once I started reading it. Very compelling story. I was expecting a better outcome, but in reality, the ending was probably the outcome suffered by a lot of slaves. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in historical fiction.
