Line Rider is the true story of the life of Joseph Harrison Pearce (1873-1958), written by his own hand. During his lifetime, the “wild west” from the storybooks still lived and breathed in one of the last places to be modernized—Arizona. Joe, as he calls himself, took various roles throughout his adventurous life, including sheep herder, cowman, courter, tracker, line rider, and, most famously, that venerated breed of law man know as the Arizona Ranger. His story leads him to encounters with cattle rustlers, gamblers, saloons, stampedes, horse thieves, Indian trackers, outlaws, and nearly every other subject that later made its way into western legend. But this story is absolutely real, told in his own voice in vivid detail.

a wealth of Arizona history. Personal stories about southern Arizona and a view of 1880’s struggle to settle the west that I was unaware of. This kind is history is not taught in a classroom.
I felt like I was sitting along side of Joseph Pearce listening to his wonderful tales of the years he spent as a Ranger. I did not know that Arizona had Rangers even though it was for a short period of time. The book is written using the same descriptive language that a man of Joseph Pearce's time in history and given life style would have used. Not lewd or gross but really gives the reader the feeling like they are setting around the campfire in the late 1890's. A wonderful book narrated by a very interesting man. For you western history buffs, don't miss it.
This is the real McCoy! A great book that captures a time capsule of little-known Arizona.
I am an avid reader of south west history and this book is a darn good one, I hated to see it end. I live here in the same area, so it was special to me. I just found out that Joe Pearce is my neighbors great uncle. It is one of those books that is very hard to put down.
I recommend it to anyone who reads and enjoys westerns. Awesome read from a man who lived it! He does a very good job describing the terrain and surroundings.
Just read this fascinating story of Joseph Pearce, made even more interesting as I have travelled the areas he worked in and its hard to imagine Clifton as it was in Pearce's time compared to now. Very descriptive, and captivating.
I found this a fascinating journal of Mr. Pearce's time on the range.
It is not filled with boasting of self-heroics, but was full of actual accounts of his life on the frontier,
and encounters with rustlers, Indians (Native Americans to be P.C.) and outlaws in general.
My only minor criticism is that the font is small, so take that into consideration if read-ability
is important to you.
